How to Prepare for Winter in Quebec city and Actually Enjoy the Outdoors...yes you can ❄️

Quebec winters are legendary: long, cold, and snowy also absolutely magical if you’re ready for them. To truly enjoy the outdoors during this season, preparation is key. We dont Stop for Winter. Our Schools stay open.People go to work.Dogs still want their walk.Winter doesn’t stop life... it just gives it better scenery. If we can do it, trust me… you can do it...with a little help! Here’s your ultimate guide from a local (me) who has survived 35 winters (did complain a few times, but survived nonetheless!)

1. Dress in Layers Winter in Quebec City

When it summer and humidity and heat it you ...you can remove layer but ...you can get quickly naked. In winter time you layer up! Quebec weather can change quickly, so layering is essential. Think merino wool or synthetic fabrics to keep sweat away from your skin. Add a warm mid-layer, like fleece or wool sweaters, and top it off with a windproof and waterproof jacket. Don’t forget insulated pants or thermal leggings if you plan on spending hours outside. Seriously, it’s a game-changer !

2. Footwear: Warmth + Traction

Your feet are crucial. Invest in waterproof, insulated boots with good traction. Pair them with thick sock consider(avoid coton) two layers if you get really cold. Quebec streets can be icy, so boots with a strong grip or even removable traction can make walking much safer and more enjoyable. Keep a spare pair of dry socks on hand in case they get wet. Remember: Old Quebec is hilly, so don’t come with running shoes when there’s a foot of snow or icy sidewalks. The city usually cleans the streets quickly, especially downtown (unlike some streets near my home but that’s another story! ;) ) .

Accessories Are Not Optional

A winter hat that covers your ears, a scarf, and mittens (warmer than gloves) are essentials. Sunglasses (can be usefull) , because sunlight reflecting off snow can be surprisingly bright. If you’re skiing or snowshoeing, consider hand warmers for extra comfort. Don’t Forget Your Skin Cold air plus wind can dry your skin. Some people use a good moisturizer and lip balm, and reapply throughout the day.

4. Stay Dry

Nothing kills a winter adventure faster than wet clothes. Waterproof outer layers, boots, and even gaiters can make a huge difference. If you’re out for a long walk in Old Quebec or exploring a park, consider waterproof backpacks to protect your gear.

5. Rent it!

So what should I do now?

Is there an easy way? Should I buy all the stuff before my trip?

You can actually rent all of it! It saves money, space, and a lot of “omg why is it so cold.”

If you want to avoid buying an entire winter wardrobe just to survive a few days especially if you’re from a warm country and have never seen snow I’ve got a solution for you.

My friend and colleague, Émilie Pelletier from HQ Service, offers probably the most complete full winter clothing rental package and it's deliver to your hôtel for your trip. The price? Around 200$ for 1–4 days ,240$ 5-7 days including all the essentials plus even a boot heaters (because frozen toes are not part of the fun). Curious? Want to rent and travel like a local without looking like a walking marshmallow? Location vêtements d’hiver to rent it :the link

6. Plan Your Activities

Quebec offers countless winter experiencesThe good thing is that the city is less crowded but it is still or even more magical!

Other Activities (so you don’t freeze in place)

  • Ski or snowboard at Le Relais, Stoneham, Mont-Ste-Anne, etc.

  • Snowshoeing rentals at Plains of Abraham, Domaine Maizeret, and more.

  • Cheer for the Remparts at Centre Vidéotron (hockey!).

  • Attend the International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

  • Visit local microbreweries.

  • Go visit a museum!

  • Do Ice canoeing !! (I never did yet but I plan to try!)

  • Go shopping (3e Avenue, Saint Joseph, Le Grand Marché, Montcalm, Cartier).

  • Take a guided tour of Château Frontenac.

  • Wear warm clothes! 😉

  • Build a snowman (or 10).

  • Breathe the cold air...!

With proper preparation, Quebec’s outdoors become a playground rather than a challenge. The key is being warm, dry, and comfortable, so you can focus on enjoying the crisp air. If it's less than - 20 Celsius ... we will agree with you that it's a cold day pis il fait frette en maudit
